Maybe You Don't Have ADHD—You're Just Trying to Operate Like a Man, Not a Woman
I'm so sick of seeing IG posts telling women that the mental load, overstimulation, sleep deprivation of motherhood, a messy bedroom, and having 12 different to-do lists are all symptoms of ADHD. That's not what's happening.
This isn't to say ADHD doesn't exist, it's to say be careful of the labels you put on yourself. I've worked with a lot of clients who have ADHD, both men and women, and like always, when trauma is healed, a LOT of symptoms remove themselves.
The overuse of labels is holding you back and keeping you in a state of victimhood. They're not helping you when it becomes your whole personality.
"I have ADHD,"
"Oh, my ADHD caused me to be xyz today."
"I'm a victim of abuse,"
"I can't do that because XYZ happened in my past."
I'm not denying your real experience. I'm just calling you out on how you're literally holding yourself back with these labels.
When your HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) is firing chronically, cortisol stays elevated, and your sympathetic nervous system dominates. The downstream symptoms are:
-
Brain fog
-
Executive dysfunction
-
Restlessness
-
Emotional volatility
-
Inability to focus
-
Sleep disruption
-
Overwhelmed by minor stimuli
That list is identical to the ADHD diagnostic criteria.
But a label of "ADHD" keeps you in a box of limitations. Versus understanding that what's driving most of these symptoms is the allostatic load, which is the cumulative wear of running in a state of chronic stress.
A woman's biology was not designed for the conditions modern life is asking it to operate inside.
Here's why:
-
Your hormonal cycle resets every 28 days. A man's resets every 24 hours.
-
Your nervous system is wired for community co-regulation. Modern motherhood happens in isolated nuclear families.
-
Your oxytocin system needs touch and slowness to function. Modern life eliminates both.
-
Postpartum, your brain undergoes structural changes that take over 2 years to settle. Most mums in the West get 6 weeks of leave.
So maybe you don't have ADHD, you're just trying to operate like a man, not a woman.
Stop thinking that motherhood revealed your ADHD. It didn't. It revealed all the sh*t you didn't heal.
It revealed the cumulative cost of running your nervous system in chronic stress for 20+ years, being asked to keep a human alive on broken sleep, with no village, with a phone in your hand scrolling and comparing yourself to others 11 hours a day. The clinical name for that cost is allostatic load. It is not ADHD.
Social bonding over a shared identity is one of the most reliable ways to spike that neurotransmitter. When you talk about your "ADHD" with other women who have it, your brain releases dopamine.
When someone questions the label, your sympathetic nervous system kicks in and you get a hit of adrenaline. Basically, your brain is being chemically rewarded for staying inside the label.
Not to mention that your reticular activating system will continue to confirm who you are. So if you're telling yourself, "I can't focus right now because of my ADHD," your brain confirms that with how you see the world and how you feel.
This limits your expansion, growth, and manifestations as you focus on limitations and keep yourself within a label, reinforcing the neutral pathway that holds the identity and putting out that frequency to attract more of that.
Repetition is how the brain and nervous system create what's true and familiar. You don't want to put in the reps for a label. That's not helping you.
So what's the actual answer if it isn't a diagnosis?
Healing the nervous system you've been overriding for decades, processing the trauma your body has been holding, and rebuilding the nervous system capacity to live in modern life without it grinding you down.
I'll take you through my Brain & Body methodology, a somatic approach where YOU know what you're releasing and consciously release it. If you aren't in the driver's seat, behaviours won't change long-term.
I've been doing trauma and nervous system healing with high-achieving women since 2018. Therapists and psychologists in my programs achieve the results they want for their clients because of my methodology.
The number of women who came to me with a diagnosis and walked out without the symptoms—because we addressed the actual conditions underneath—is the reason I'm posting this. I'm done with women limiting themselves with labels and thinking that's just the end. Their whole self becomes this label.
You are a woman with biology that needs different conditions to thrive than the ones modern life is currently offering you. Stop letting a label tell you who you are.
As high-functioning women, we can often forget that we are holding onto heavy things. We've gotten so good at being in control, managing our problems, and shoving down our emotions.
But healing is what gets you to your next level, and we all know we function better without insomnia, procrastination, and gut issues. When your body (and brain) are in alignment with the TRUEST version of yourself, creating your dream life becomes as easy as breathing.
