How To Heal Your Relationship With Money
Your relationship with money affects far more than your bank balance. It's woven into so many areas of your life—your health, your relationships, your sense of security—and it can be a source of stress or peace. Healing your relationship with money isn’t just about having more of it, though that's certainly a plus. It's about shifting your energy and how you feel about money so that you can live a more abundant and fulfilled life.
For me, my relationship with money was pretty messed up at one point. I was so deep in a scarcity mindset that I would skip buying breakfast food just to save money. I thought if I skipped breakfast and just had coffee, I could save that little bit and it would somehow make a difference.
What I didn’t realize at the time was that this behavior reflected my deeply ingrained belief that there was never enough. I grew up with programming from my parents that told me to hold onto money tightly, to save every cent, and to avoid spending whenever possible—even when it was unnecessary. Despite being well-off, I was taught that money wasn’t something to be freely spent, but something to be hoarded.
Many of us have similar blueprints around money, passed down from our parents, who were doing the best they could with what they knew. My dad, for instance, came from a humble background, where money was scarce, and built everything himself. His relationship with money made sense based on his experiences. But for me, continuing to hold onto that blueprint started to limit my potential. It wasn’t until I actively worked on healing my relationship with money that things started to shift for me.
One of the biggest lessons I learned? Your relationship with money is a mirror of your self-worth. If you don't feel worthy of having, holding, and spending money, you’ll subconsciously sabotage yourself from attracting it into your life. Healing my money mindset wasn't just about learning to spend—it was about learning to trust that money would always flow back in.
Now, I look at money through a completely different lens. I can see the value in spending on things that truly matter to me, like buying high-quality, healthy food or paying for first-class flights to ensure I’m well-rested. I no longer grip onto money in fear; I spend freely, and in turn, I receive freely. I know that money is a tool that allows me to live a richer life—not just materially, but emotionally and spiritually.
How to Begin Shifting Your Money Mindset
If you’re ready to shift your relationship with money, start by asking yourself these key questions:
- How do you feel when you think about money? Do you feel anxious, stressed, or calm? How you feel when you think about money says a lot about your relationship with it.
- What do you feel or think when money enters your account? Do you feel relief, joy, or dread about the responsibility of managing it?
- How do you feel about others who have more money than you? This one can be eye-opening. If you feel resentment or envy, it’s a sign you’re operating from a scarcity mindset.
No matter where you are in your money journey—whether you’ve already done a lot of healing work or are just starting out—these questions can help you identify where you may still be holding onto limiting beliefs.
Elevating to the Next Level with Money
Here’s the thing: Even if you’ve done a lot of work on your relationship with money, when you’re ready to break through to your next level of wealth, it requires a new version of yourself. It’s about relating to money in a new way. For me, this involved reprogramming my money blueprint to the point where I’m no longer afraid to spend or invest in things that bring value to my life.
When we bought our home, I drained my bank account to make the down payment, and you know what? It felt expansive. Yes, it was scary to see my account drop, but it also felt empowering because I knew the money would flow back in. And sure enough, it did. In fact, my bank account not only bounced back, but it doubled within a year. That’s the power of healing your money mindset—when you stop holding on so tightly, money starts flowing in easily.
It’s All About the Energy
Ultimately, your energy around money matters. You can shift your energy instantly just by changing your thoughts and beliefs about money. Decide that money flows to you easily, that you are worthy of having it, and that spending it on things that bring you joy is a good thing.
Even in moments when you don’t feel “high vibe” or when life feels chaotic, money can still flow to you. I’ve had payments come in while I was mid-argument with my fiancé or in the middle of a stressful moment. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about the energy and beliefs you hold around money.
So, what can you decide about money today? How can you shift your mindset to open yourself up to more abundance?
